about

Mater Thallium was formed in 2013 as as a celebration to iconic bearers of dark rock music — Candlemass, King Crimson and Black Sabbath — by two members of the legendary burlesque rock unit Procosmian Fannyfiddlers.

Mater Thallium’s eponymous debut-album from the same year was a full-on symphonic doom rock album. After this was released, it became clear that what initially was meant to be a one-off project had taken on a life of its own. Mater Thallium felt like a real band, and the quartet immediately started work on what has become the far more progressive and adventurous concept album ‘Abandoned By The Sun’.

The opening track, ‘Sudden Dereliction’, establishes a link to the previous record, but hereafter the music moves in multiple, unexpected directions, showcasing great melody lines, and a high degree of diversity, underlining the sadness and despair of the libretto’s protagonists.

‘Abandoned By The Sun’ reads as a non-linear narrative, its focal point being the dubious disappearance of a 15-year old girl. The idea projected is that nothing can be worse than to lose someone dear without getting any answers. Mater Thallium explores the inter-human mechanisms at work when a person vanishes without a trace. The girl’s disappearance secures a downward spiral and a grave ripple effect that threatens to ruin the lives of everyone close to her. The album’s finale, ‘Finite’, offers a glimpse of what really happened that fatal day, though leaving the listeners sufficient interpretive space.
